Rodent Control

Rodent Control:

Rodent Control-Rats, Mice & Bandicoots

There are 1500-2000 different documented rodent species.Rats and mice are most wide spread pests that not only causes nuisance but also spread epidemics and diseases.

Out of them 3 are the main types:-

  1. Bandicoots
  2. Roof Rats
  3. House Mice

Rodent management involve two stage process

  1. Eradication of existing rats
  2. Control of future entries

Lifecycle

  • Bandicoots have an exceptionally high breeding rate for an animal of their size and a very short gestation period of just 12 days.
  • The mother gives birth to up to 6 babies which crawl into the pouch until weaned at around 9 months.

House Mouse

Lifecycle

  • 4 – 16 young per litter; 7 – 8 litters a year.
  • Gestation period of about 3 weeks.
  • 8 – 12 weeks from birth to sexual maturity.

Black Rat

Lifecycle

  • 5 – 10 young per litter; 3 – 6 litters a year.
  • Gestation period of about 3 weeks.
  • 12 – 16 weeks from birth to sexual maturity.

Mode Of Entry:

Rodents can enter a building through any hole whether of sewer or a hole left for electrical wiring. They can adapt any mode of entry to enter a building. They mostly prefer areas where they can find suitable environment of food, shelter, breeding, etc.

Eradication of existing rats

  1. Toxic Bait mode - Formulated food based baits containing food grains or seeds are placed. These baits are slow poison and takes 3-5 days for the target to die. They are easy to place in the burrows, tunnels and all hidden areas . Rodents gnaw or chew into the packet to feed on the bait. People who have small children or pets at home use tamper resistant baits so that accidental poisoning can be avoided. The baits should be placed along the wall as the rodents travel along the wall side. Poisoned rodents often die in inaccessible locations within a building, leading to unpleasant odors. If you find any dead rodents, dispose of them by placing them in plastic bags and putting them in the trash or by burying. Wear gloves while handling dead rodents to prevent disease spread. Store any unused bait out of the reach of children and pets.
  2. Traditional traps/Glue Traps - In this system ,therats get trapped in traditional traps or get glued in the glue trap. One does not have to worry about where the rat will die. Glue traps are set with Peanut butter or Breads, and other eatables. Place traps against a wall, behind an object, or in secluded areas where rodent droppings, gnawing, and damage are evident. In Glue Board Rodents get stuck and suffocate to death. These shall be placed along wall side. There are chances that a glue trap lose its effectiveness due cold weather, dust, pet's fur. Regular check up to examine the effectiveness of the glue traps should be done.
  3. Ultra-Sonic Rat Repellers Device - a device which repels rodents and other creepers from entering the premise. The vibration produced by these devices prohibits rodents from invading your premise.

Control of future entries

Rodent Proofing To stop rodents from entering is to seal all cracks holes, openings under doors, building foundation, vents etc. Do not use plastic sheeting, wood, or any material the rodents could gnaw through. Make sure doors, windows, and screens fit tightly. If not, cover the edges with sheet metal to prevent gnawing. Because rodents are excellent climbers, you must also seal any openings above ground level.
